Technical Data and Guidelines for Barrier Free Built Environment for Specially Abled and Elderly Persons

1.Clear space required by a person on wheel-chair is 900 MM clear without any obstruction and diameter required for his/ her turning is 1500 MM minimum to 2000 MM maximum.

2.Heights of switches, doors and handles for ease of access and security by person on wheel chair should be between 400 MM- 500 MM from finished floor level (tile level)

3.Slope of the ramp; minimum requirement is 1 in 12 Mts. This means to climb a height of 1 meter, 12 meters of horizontal distance on floor should  be considered on floor. Railing height should be 700 MM. At least one entrance to the building should have ramp access.

4.For residential buildings, a minimum of 1 unit for every 25 units should be designed and dedicated to specially abled people with due other site requirements for specially abled.

5.For public offices; post office, shops, ATMS, banks, educational institutions a minimum of 1 lowered service counter should be dedicated.

6.For places of worship; a dedicated area for persons with wheel chair to sit and worship should be dedicated with special attention to climbing on ramp etc.

7.For eating joints, 1 table without stools every 10 tables should be designed in  furniture layouts with adequate wheelchair moving space. 

8.In any public gathering or waiting area, 1 wheel chair space for up to 50 seating chairs and 2 wheel chair space for every 100 plus space should be provided with ease of circulation (appropriate corridor width)

9.Level differences in public spaces should be avoided as a pert of design. Single steps/ two steps for ambience only bifurcation does not help all segments of the society.

10.Surface parking (On ground- not in basement) for specially abled should be provided within 30 meters maximum from the entrance door of the building. The width of the parking bay should be 3.60 meters.

11.Adequate signage should be provided in all areas where provisions for specially abled are laid. This should make sure that lay man does not occupy or access the same.

12.Non slippery materials should be chosen for the ramps to provide adequate friction for movement on wheel chair or clutches.

13.Public buildings should have a minimum of 1800 MM width of corridors for smooth movements/ circulation.

14.In malls, public shopping complex, institutes 1 minimum toilet should be designed and installed in the cluster of general toilets/ urinals which should be the first in the row of the cluster.

15.The provisions suggested above shall take care of people on wheel chair, difficulty in walking, old age people
